Spa Filters

Your filters will last longer if you take good care of them. This means routinely taking them out and giving them a thorough rinse with the hose, usually once a week or when they look dirty. As well, you should soak your filters regularly in a filter cleaning solution, such as SpaGuard Filter Brite. This will help get rid of a lot of the oils and grime that can build up.

How to Clean your Filter Cartridge(s)

  1. Remove the cartridge(s) from their housing following the manufacturer’s directions.
  2. Use your garden hose to thoroughly rinse the filter. Hold the filter at a 45-degree angle and wash it from top to bottom. Focus on the spaces between the pleats to remove all visible debris and residue.
  3. Soak the filter for at least one hour (preferably overnight) in a commercial filter cleaner like SpaGuard Filter Brite.
  4. Rinse the cartridge of all cleaning residue.
  5. If you notice a coating of algae, calcium carbonate (white build-up) or minerals, soak your filter(s) in one part muriatic acid to 20 parts water until all bubbling stops. Always ensure the cartridge has been thoroughly cleaned of all oils and cleaning residue before doing this, as not doing so can result in permanent restriction of water flow or filter damage.
  6. Rinse cartridge(s) and re-assemble housing.

To extend the life of your cartridge(s), buy two sets and rotate usage. When one set needs to be cleaned, replace it with the other clean set. This gives you plenty of time to clean the cartridges and then dry them out completely while still enjoying your spa. When the cartridge dries, the weave of the fabric becomes tighter, allowing it to capture smaller debris.

You do not want to be too overzealous when cleaning your filters. While they should be cleaned regularly and thoroughly, you should only need to soak them in a filter-cleaner a maximum of once a month, depending on usage and the appearance of the filter. Never use a pressure washer or a brush to clean a filter, as these can weaken or rip the filter media. Do not use any type of soap or foaming detergent on a filter either, as you will never see the end of bubbles in your spa. As well, do not clean your filter in the dishwasher, as they may become warped and unusable.

You can usually tell that you need a new filter when:
1. The time you can go between cleanings gets shorter and shorter.
2. You notice tears or rips in the material of the filter.
3. The pressure of the jets seems to have diminished. Check the pressure coming from the jets without the filters in place and compare it to when they are in place. If the difference in pressure is significant and your filters were just cleaned, this may indicate that they need replacing.

Types of Spa Filters

There are many different sizes and shapes of filters available, just as there are many different kinds of spas and hot tubs. Filters can range in size from 25 square feet of pleated fabric right up to 150 square feet. There are several spa manufacturers that use the same size of filter, but it is always a good idea to know what type of filter your spa requires. Below is a list of the more common filters and their dimensions
