POOL & SPA PERMITTING - TOWNSHIP OF NORTH DUMFRIES

City Requirements for fences, decks, pools & hot tubs

Fences & Decks
You do not require a permit to build a fence unless it is securing a swimming pool. As well, a deck that is less than two feet (0.61m) high that is not attached to a building does not require a building permit.

Hot Tubs
You are required by the Township to obtain a permit to install a hot tub on your property. You need to ensure that you have either a locking hardcover or a non-climbable fence that is at least 5 feet in height. Include a site plan that shows where the hot tub will be placed, noting the distance from property lines and any structures in the yard. The permit will cost $50.00 and application can be obtained through the Township.

Pools & Pool Fencing
Whether you are getting an above ground pool or an inground pool, you will need to obtain a permit. The cost of the permit is $50.00. Bring a copy of your survey including the dimensions and shape of the pool, where the pool will be placed and distance from other structures and property lines. The pool as well as any decking, sheds and walkways need to be a minimum of one metre (about three feet) from side and rear lot lines. You should also include a diagram of the type of fencing you will be using. Fencing is required to be at least 1.52 metres in height and should be constructed so that the only means of entry is through lockable gates or doors that are also no less than 1.52 metres in height.

For above ground pools, you are permitted to use fencing that attaches to the top of the pool structure as long as the fencing itself is non-climbable and reaches the proper height. For safety, you need to use exterior ladders or steps that are either removable or have a lockable cover over them that restricts access to the pool when it is not in use.

For additional information about obtaining a permit you can contact the Building Official of the Township of North Dumfries at (519) 621-0340, ext.13.
